Acquiring new rolling stock will be an important step in developing the capital’s transportation infrastructure.
Tbilisi aims to modernize its metro, considering that many existing trains were manufactured during the Soviet era and need replacement.
It’s important to note that this project will be carried out within the procedures defined by the World Bank, emphasizing its transparency and compliance with international standards.
This news follows previous attempts to modernize the metro.
In 2020, a tender was launched to purchase 44 new cars, but due to various factors, including the inclusion of the company “Metrovagonmash” in the sanctions list, the contract was terminated.
In light of this, the new initiative to purchase 97 cars represents a strategic move to update the metro fleet.
Georgia’s government plans for the future also include purchasing an additional 212 cars to further update the Tbilisi metro fleet.
This process involves creating new trains and replacing old cars over a span of 15 years, demonstrating a serious commitment to modernity and efficiency in developing transportation infrastructure.
The news of metro car procurement for Tbilisi underscores the city’s aspirations for modern and convenient public transportation, highlighting its status as an important transportation hub in the region.
