The North Sea-Baltic railway corridor came close to Ukraine
20.01.2022
Three new points are attached to the North Sea-Baltic Rail Freight Corridor (RFC NS-B). Among them is the Polish Medyka, located on the border with Ukraine, reports railway magazine Railway Supply.
The ports of Zeebrugge and Ghent in Belgium, as well as the port of Terneuzen in the Netherlands, are connected to the corridor.
The main lines will be Medyka, Zeebrugge and Ghent, with Terneuzen being the connecting route. It is important to note that the ports of Ghent and Terneuzen are connected to each other via a canal.
The report notes that the port of Zeebrugge is focused on rail freight, which accounts for about 15% of total freight.
It has rail links with, among others, France, Italy, Spain and Poland.

In addition, last year it merged into one port company with the port of Antwerp, which is already owned by RFC NS-B. Their goal is to become the largest container port in Europe.
Interesting potential has the North Sea port (Gent-Terneuzen). From February 2021, the European Commission has announced that it intends to introduce the Ghent-Terneusen Canal Zone in the North Sea and Baltic RFC.
The North Sea port, which already belongs to the Rhine-Alpine and North Sea-Mediterranean RFC, considers rail transport to be the main one.
From 7 to 8 million tons of cargo is annually transported from the port by rail. This represents 10% of all freight traffic between the port and the hinterland, which is a relatively high share compared to other ports in Western Europe. More than 300 trains come and go from here every week.
In addition to the ports in the Benelux region, the North Sea-Baltic RFC connected one more station on the Polish-Ukrainian border.

The Medyka terminal was originally used to transport iron ore.
Indeed, the terminal is part of PKP’s diversification strategy, and PKP Cargo’s goal is to “turn Medyk into new Malashevichi.”
Therefore, the company purchased two container handling equipment stackers. Now the terminal can serve 3-4 trains per day.
One of the main advantages is that it offers transshipment from a narrow gauge track to a wide one. In addition, there are container storage options.
As previously reported, PKP CARGO is preparing a terminal in Medyka for the Baltic Sea – Black Sea corridor.
