A broad alliance of states on Saturday unveiled ambitious plans to create a modern Spice Route connecting Europe, the Middle East, and India, strengthening trade ties with potentially far-reaching geopolitical consequences, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply, citing bssnews.
The United States, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, and others initiated the proposal to link railways, ports, electricity grids, data transmission networks, and hydrogen pipelines at the Group of 20 summit in New Delhi.

While this scheme is trade-focused, it may have various implications, including fostering contacts between ancient rivals Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Signatories hope this could help integrate India’s vast market of 1.4 billion people with Western countries, offer a counter to China’s lavish infrastructure spending, boost the Middle East’s economy, and aid in normalizing relations between Israel and Gulf Arab states.
“It’s a really big deal,” said U.S. President Joe Biden during the presentation, calling the plan ‘historic.’
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated that the so-called India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor is “much more than just a railroad or a cable.”
“It’s a green and digital bridge across continents and civilizations,” she said.
One of the proposed projects aims to link railway and port facilities in the Middle East, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel, potentially speeding up trade between India and Europe by up to 40 percent.
