19.12.2023
The locomotive, intended for the Tanzanian Railway Corporation, underwent testing on a section of the new standard gauge railway, where similar trains will operate in the future, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The testing included checking the braking systems at speeds of up to 160 km/h.
In 2021, Tanzania signed a contract with Hyundai Rotem and Sing Sung Rolling Stock Technology for the delivery of 17 electric locomotives and 80 electric trains for the ongoing SGR network project, with a total cost of $295.65 million.

The tested electric locomotive is the first South Korean-manufactured locomotive designed for Tanzania.
The SGR project, initiated in 2017, aims to modernize the outdated railway system, replacing the meter gauge laid during the colonial era.
The first and second construction phases, covering a length of 722 km, are over 90% complete, with plans to expand the network to Rwanda, Burundi, and the DRC.
Upon project completion, a 40% reduction in road congestion and freight transport expenses is expected.
