01.10.2023
Alstom and Ferrovie Nord Milano (FNM) will unveil Italy’s first hydrogen train at the EXPO Ferroviaria 2023 exhibition, taking place from October 3 to 5, 2023, at Fiera Milano Rho, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
As part of the event, Alstom will showcase a wide range of solutions and technologies to strengthen its position as a leader in intelligent and environmentally friendly mobility.
The first intercontinental high-speed rail line has been inaugurated in China
During the ceremony on October 3, 2023, the two companies will introduce the Coradia Stream hydrogen train with zero direct carbon emissions, equipped with fuel cells.
The railway operator of the Lombardy region and Alstom signed a contract in November 2020 for six hydrogen trains, including an option for an additional batch of 8 trains.
Under the €160 million contract, Alstom is required to deliver the new hydrogen trains this year.
The hydrogen trains are based on the Coradia Stream regional train platform and will feature the same fuel cell engine technology as the Coradia iLint.
The Coradia Stream regional train is designed for the European market and is already being manufactured for Italy at Alstom’s major facilities in Italy, including the Savigliano plant responsible for project development, production, and certification, and the Bologna plant for onboard systems.
The first hydrogen train in Italy will meet high comfort standards already appreciated by passengers of its electric version.
The hydrogen version will match the operational characteristics of diesel trains, including their range.
In Germany, railway stations are transferred to the railway infrastructure operator
The hydrogen-powered train will debut on the suburban rail network in Valtellina, one of the largest valleys in the central Alps in eastern Lombardy.
The Coradia Stream hydrogen train will also serve the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina, demonstrating that future-ready mobile solutions are feasible where there is a clear mandate, as in the Lombardy region, to decarbonize transportation.
