The Central Asian Transport Projects Investors Forum, held in Brussels on January 29–30, 2024, as part of the European Global Gateway initiative, emerged as a pivotal event for advancing transport connections between the European Union and the Central Asian countries, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Participants unanimously emphasized the urgency of developing the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TCITR) and announced plans for €10 billion in sustainable transport investments in the region.

Agreements include a €1.5 billion program in 2025, supported by the EU and the European Investment Bank (EIB), aimed at infrastructure projects in Central Asia. Additionally, a coordination platform will monitor the planned TCITR development.

The OECD’s International Trade Centre program will commence in 2024, promoting the efficient use of the trans-Caspian transport network for regional development.

A significant step is the introduction of Resident Twinning Advisors from 2024, operational in the transport ministries of the five regional countries.

A memorandum of understanding on investments totaling €1.47 billion was signed between the EIB and the governments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and the Development Bank of Kazakhstan.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) also signed a memorandum with Kazakhstan for €1.5 billion in investments for regional transport development.

These agreements mark a crucial stride in strengthening cooperation and developing transport infrastructure between the EU and Central Asian countries.
