An agreement with the island authorities to form a working group was reached to analyze the economic feasibility of this project on Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Representatives of the Canary Islands discussed rail system projects that will connect the island capitals with their respective airports.

It is planned that this will not only contribute to sustainable mobility on the islands but also help Spain in addressing the decarbonization challenges in the transportation sector.

On Gran Canaria, plans have been developed to construct a 57 km railway from the administrative center Las Palmas de Gran Canaria through the airport to the resort area of Meloneras.

However, the project, initiated from 2009 to 2018 and receiving financial support of 22.4 million euros, faced difficulties in securing further funding of 1.65 billion euros needed for the construction of the line.

These difficulties have led to delays in tendering and the commencement of construction works.

Nevertheless, the agreement to form a working group and discuss railway projects on the islands demonstrates a commitment to further developing transportation infrastructure and improving mobility in the Canary Islands.
