17.06.2024
The company has signed a contract worth €437.6 million for the supply of ten Aventra electric trains, totaling 90 carriages, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

These trains will operate on the 117 km Elizabeth line serving London’s metropolitan area.
Tesla is transitioning to environmentally friendly trains
Previously, Alstom had appealed to the UK government for a minimum order to sustain production at the Derby plant until 2026, coinciding with the commencement of a contract for high-speed trains.
The potential closure of the plant, which has been producing rolling stock for nearly 150 years, had been a significant concern in the UK railway industry for almost a year.
Spring brought news of site conservation and the initiation of layoffs affecting 1300 employees.
Under the new contract, the UK Department for Transport will allocate €261 million for the purchase of trains, with Transport for London (TfL) providing €177 million for their maintenance until 2046.
This order has rescued the Derby plant from imminent closure, preserving its long-standing history and pivotal role in the region’s manufacturing sector.
Closure would have had profound economic and social repercussions, including job losses and negative impacts on the local economy.
The contract with TfL and the UK Department for Transport not only secures the plant’s future but also enables Alstom to continue expanding and maintaining high production standards.
The Aventra platform, on which the new electric trains will be based, is renowned for its efficiency and reliability, making it an ideal choice for the Elizabeth line.
Thus, the new contract not only supports the Derby plant’s manufacturing capabilities but also contributes to London’s transport infrastructure development.
The Elizabeth line plays a crucial role in the city’s transport network, connecting various metropolitan areas.
The new trains will enhance passenger service quality, improve comfort, and reduce travel times.
Funding from the Department for Transport and TfL underscores the project’s importance to the UK government and London administration.
Investments in railway infrastructure are integral to the country’s and city’s transport development strategy, aimed at enhancing citizens’ quality of life and mitigating environmental impacts.
In conclusion, the new contract for Aventra electric trains on the Elizabeth line has not only saved Alstom’s Derby plant from closure but also marks a significant step in developing London’s transport infrastructure.
This project highlights the importance of collaboration between public and private entities in delivering major infrastructure initiatives that benefit citizens’ quality of life and support economic development.
