This Christmas, Thameslink railway will undergo essential upgrades to provide smoother and more reliable journeys. Travelers are advised to check schedules and plan ahead to avoid disruptions.

Track Upgrades for Better Journeys This Christmas

From 25 to 29 December, engineers will replace worn rails between St Pancras and Herne Hill. Over 1,670 metres of new tracks will be installed on the route between Farringdon and Blackfriars. These upgrades are designed to enhance travel reliability for all passengers.

This work ensures a better future for Thameslink services and supports the long-term sustainability of Central London’s railway. Over the years, thousands of trains have passed over the current rails, causing significant wear that could result in faults or delays. The new track will reduce these risks and improve overall performance.

Greener Railway Solutions for the Future

Thameslink is committed to building a greener railway while working towards net-zero carbon emissions. Recycling scrap rails from this project will reduce waste and support a circular economy. This approach minimizes raw material usage and helps achieve sustainability goals by 2045 in Scotland and by 2050 in England.

These green initiatives reflect Thameslink’s dedication to providing environmentally friendly solutions while improving passenger experience. Discover more examples of our sustainability efforts on our website.

Plan Your Journey This Christmas

During the festive period, services on key Thameslink routes will be affected by the upgrade works. Trains will not run between St Pancras International and Herne Hill from 25 to 29 December. Disruptions will also impact routes from Bedford, Luton, and Three Bridges.

Travelers heading to airports, including Gatwick and Luton Airport Parkway, should expect fewer trains and busier replacement services. Replacement buses will be available on certain routes but are expected to experience high demand.
