Thailand’s State Railway Enhances Connectivity Through Fibre Network

Thailand’s State Railway signed a major agreement with ROCTEC Global Public Company to implement a nationwide telecommunications upgrade. SKY ICT Public Company and United Telecom Sales and Services Company also joined the consortium.

The initiative aims to improve railway safety, operational management, and passenger experience. At the same time, it prepares the rail system for future digital integration and expansion.

ROCTEC will lead the design and implementation of a high-speed fibre optic network. This network will span SRT’s routes, buildings, and administrative centers across Thailand.

The project involves two core components. First, the creation of a telecom backbone using Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), IP/MPLS, and updated telephony systems.

Second, the team will install approximately 3,000 km of fibre optic cables. These upgrades will increase bandwidth, ensure stronger communication systems, and enable advanced real-time operations.

Thailand’s State Railway to Establish Cybersecurity and Wi-Fi Systems

New systems will support critical functions such as train control telephony, CCTV, IP telephony, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). These technologies will boost efficiency and improve service reliability.

Public Wi-Fi and an IP Backbone will enhance digital services. A centralized Network Operations Centre will manage and monitor the systems in real time for continuous performance.

A cybersecurity framework will also be implemented to protect critical data and prevent digital threats. This will ensure long-term system security and reliability.

ROCTEC CEO Weng Sam Lam said the partnership reflects national infrastructure goals. He emphasized that the project will enable smarter, more connected operations across Thailand’s railway network.

Thailand expects its high-speed rail link to China via Laos to open in 2030. This digital transformation supports that long-term connectivity goal and enhances regional economic growth.
