It has been set up on the basis of a joint venture between India’s Texmaco Rail & Engineering (Texrail) and Czech company Nymwag, whose establishment was previously reported by The Times of India. Construction of the facility has been completed, and it specialises in manufacturing freight wagons and components in India.

Texrail and Nymwag freight wagon plant in Kolkata: capacity and products

The design output of the new plant, which was also covered by Railway Supply, is 2,500 wagons per year. Trial production is already under way, and the first series-built product — a four-axle open wagon — is planned for February 2026. This release will mark an important stage in the development of Texrail and Nymwag freight wagon production for the Indian market.

In July 2024, Nymwag’s head Petr Vlček specified that the Kolkata facility will produce open wagons, container flat wagons, tank wagons, as well as assemblies and components for wagons. The product range includes 30,000 suspension beams and 10,000 pneumatic brake pipes, which underlines the plant’s focus on mass production of key components.

The plant’s production facilities occupy 8,300 m² and include four production lines. These lines are equipped with cutting systems from US–Swedish company ESAB, welding equipment from Austria’s Fronius, as well as cranes, tooling, saws and press brakes supplied by Indian manufacturers; these features are also detailed by RAILMARKET.com. Cast components for the joint venture plant are supplied by a nearby Texrail foundry, which shortens logistics and supports stable deliveries.

Texrail and Nymwag joint venture and export plans

The creation of the Texmaco Rail & Engineering (Texrail) and Nymwag joint venture, with equal shares to produce freight wagons and components, was agreed in April 2023. Construction of the plant began in March 2024, and at that time the project cost was estimated at $15.6 million, illustrating the scale of investment in freight wagon and component manufacturing in India.

Project governance is organised through a six-member board of directors that includes three representatives from Nymwag — directors for production, technology and quality. This structure allows the Czech side to take a direct role in quality control and technology implementation.

Alongside meeting domestic demand in India, partners Texrail and Nymwag are from the outset targeting exports from the plant. Finished freight wagons and components are planned to be supplied to Europe, Asia and North America, turning the Kolkata facility into an important export centre for the region.
