The procurement budget ranges from 1.596 billion to 2.468 billion lei (€330–€520 million). This project is part of Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), approved by the EU. The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2025, with deliveries scheduled within 225 months of contract signing.

After the failure of the third tender, authorities redirected part of the funds toward highway construction. However, the urgent need to replace diesel-powered trains with alternative propulsion compelled them to relaunch the tender.

Importance of the Hydrogen Train Tender for Infrastructure Development

Around 80% of Romania’s railway network remains unelectrified, creating demand for innovative solutions. Softronic plans to invest €10 million in developing battery-powered locomotives, promoting a shift to eco-friendly transport.

Hydrogen trains can significantly reduce carbon emissions and reliance on diesel fuel. They represent a vital step toward sustainable regional development and environmental improvement.

Prospects for Implementing the Hydrogen Train Procurement Tender

The tender’s implementation will undergo strict EU oversight to meet PNRR requirements. Authorities emphasize that the project will create jobs and support local industries. Successful execution will strengthen Romania’s leadership in green technologies.

Romania’s railways require substantial investments, but plans to transition to hydrogen propulsion look promising. Projects like this pave the way for a modern, sustainable transportation future.
