Copenhagen’s transport authority Metroselskabet has launched a tender for the operation of the Copenhagen metro and the maintenance of its entire system. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The contract is valued at €2.4 billion. Applications for prequalification are open until July 31, 2025. The new operator is expected to begin service on September 29, 2027, replacing the current contractor, Metro Service.

Tender for the operation of the Copenhagen metro: international bidding begins

The contract will run through 2039, with an option to extend for an additional three years. A joint venture between France’s RATP Dev and Singapore’s ComfortDelGro Transit has already announced its participation. Both companies have extensive experience managing metro systems worldwide.

Record ridership and future outlook after the tender for the operation of the Copenhagen metro

In 2024, the Copenhagen metro set a new passenger record with 126 million trips, surpassing the previous high of 120 million in 2023. On weekdays, the system handles around 400,000 passengers daily. The network will continue expanding, with two new stations set to open on Line M4 by 2030.

The metro system includes 44 stations and 43 kilometers of track across four lines. Metroselskabet, which owns the infrastructure, is jointly held by the Danish government and the municipalities of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg.

The tender for the operation of the Copenhagen metro marks a significant step in the city’s long-term strategy to enhance its public transport network.
