25.11.2024
Ghana officially opened the 97km Tema-Mpakadan Railway, funded with a $447m loan from India Exim Bank. This development marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s transport sector and economic integration efforts. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Tema-Mpakadan Railway Boosts Ghana’s Transport and Trade Infrastructure
The railway connects Tema’s industrial hub with Mpakadan in the Eastern Region, Ghana’s first standard-gauge rail link. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led the inauguration, emphasizing its importance for trade and logistics.
Why Crete Lacks Railway Infrastructure?
This project plays a vital role in Ghana’s multi-modal transport network, linking Tema Port to the country’s northern regions. It aims to reduce road congestion, cut transport costs, and boost port competitiveness.
Construction, initiated in 2018, concluded under a $447m credit from India Exim Bank. Afcons Infrastructure executed the project, while Italy’s Team Engineering supervised various elements, including tracks and bridges.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted railways as cost-efficient and essential for regional economic integration. He reiterated his government’s plan to develop over 4,500km of railway tracks nationwide.
The new railway line is expected to enhance agricultural and industrial trade, facilitating fuel, cement, and produce transport. It will benefit Ghana’s market and strengthen trade ties with landlocked neighbors.
As part of the Ghana-Burkina Faso Railway Interconnectivity Project, this marks the first phase connecting Tema Port to Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou.
Key Benefits of the Tema-Mpakadan Railway
The Tema-Mpakadan Railway reduces road congestion, lowers transport costs, and improves port operations. It enhances Ghana’s trade dynamics while fostering economic ties within the region.
Future Prospects for the Tema-Mpakadan Railway
The Tema-Mpakadan Railway is a critical step in Ghana’s broader railway expansion, linking key regions. It supports trade growth and regional connectivity, benefiting agriculture and industries alike.
