Tbilisi Metro to Upgrade Fleet with €150M CRRC Deal
17.07.2025
Tbilisi Metro is preparing for a major upgrade by signing a €150 million deal with CRRC to supply 111 rail cars and replace its aging trains. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The city’s mayor’s office reached an agreement with GT Group to deliver the new rolling stock within five years. Each car will accommodate up to 280 passengers.

The plan includes assembling 14 four-car trains and five five-car sets. GT Group representatives emphasize that this modernization will improve reliability and passenger comfort, which is vital as demand continues to grow.

Tbilisi Metro and Contract Details
The tender for this purchase was announced in November last year, aiming to buy 97 cars for around €200 million. Financing is supported by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank together with Georgia’s central government.
Previously, Tbilisi Metro planned to acquire 44 cars from Russia’s Metrovagonmash for €49 million, but the city canceled the contract in 2023 after the manufacturer was sanctioned.
Tbilisi Metro: Future Plans
In November 2023, Georgia’s government announced plans to purchase 212 cars for €475 million to form 45 train sets. Complete fleet renewal is expected to take about 15 years.
Currently, Tbilisi Metro operates 48 trains comprising 192 cars. New trains will reduce operating costs thanks to improved energy efficiency and advanced control systems.
