Tbilisi brings trams back to city streets

City Hall has announced a tender for the design and construction of a new tram line. The route will connect the rapidly developing Didi Dighomi district with the “Didube” metro station.

The line will stretch for 7.5 kilometers and feature 11 stops along the way. Both the authorities and residents expect the project to return a modern and eco-friendly transport mode to the city.

Trams first appeared in the Georgian capital in 1904 and served as a key part of the city’s transport system for decades. However, operations were halted in 2006 due to outdated infrastructure. Now, the authorities are focusing on modern technology and comfort.

Tbilisi upgrades its metro for a growing city

In addition to the tram project, the city is expanding its metro system. Officials have announced the construction of a third line that will link Didube and Rustaveli, passing through the Saburtalo and Vake districts.

The new line will be 8.5 kilometers long. In 2026, the city will allocate up to $40 million for the initial phase, followed by $70 million annually in 2027 and 2028. The project is expected to be completed within seven years.

Mayor Kakha Kaladze emphasized that the new lines will reduce road congestion and make transportation more sustainable. Moreover, partnering with international companies will ensure innovative solutions and a high level of service.

Urban experts note that developing a comprehensive transport system will help Tbilisi improve its environmental situation and create a foundation for steady economic and social growth.

When will construction of the new tram line in Tbilisi begin?

The project will start soon after the completion of tender procedures, with initial phases expected to be completed within two years.

Why is Tbilisi developing tram and metro systems at the same time?

The city aims to ease traffic congestion, improve travel convenience, and create an environmentally friendly transport system for residents and visitors.

Which areas of Tbilisi will the third metro line connect?

The new metro line will link Didube and Rustaveli, passing through the densely populated Saburtalo and Vake districts.
