Two refurbished 2050-class locomotives re-entered service in late 2024, strengthening Tasmania’s rail freight capabilities. Another locomotive is expected to join the fleet by mid-2025, reflecting steady project progress.

TasRail’s upgrades enable the fleet to transport agricultural, mining, and forestry goods more efficiently. The initiative also supports TasRail’s transition toward a lower-emissions fleet by 2030.

How TasRail’s Overhaul Supports Sustainable Rail Transport?

Minister Kerry Vincent highlighted the critical role of rail in reducing road congestion and emissions. “Without TasRail, Tasmania would face 150,000 additional truck movements annually,” he noted.

The project significantly cuts road maintenance costs and improves safety for motorists. TasRail’s commitment to reliable, cost-effective transport bolsters Tasmania’s key industries.

Comprehensive updates include advanced engines, rewired control systems, and upgraded driver facilities. These enhancements ensure TasRail remains a cornerstone of Tasmania’s freight infrastructure.

Through the LLEP, TasRail delivers modernized, sustainable rail solutions that meet the evolving needs of Tasmania’s economy and environment. This initiative underscores the importance of forward-thinking investment.
