“The technical team consisting of the transport secretary, security agencies, and management personnel has also commenced investigations into the cause,” TRC stated, with the issue referred to by officials as “operational hitches.”
The corporation expressed regret for travel disruption and confirmed there were no injuries or fatalities. It said safety remained the priority while the investigation continued.
Train Derailment Highlights New Line’s Early Challenges
Tanzania rolled out its 541km Standard-Gauge Railway in August 2024 between its capital city, Dar es Salaam, and Dodoma. The $3.1 billion railway, constructed by a Turkish company called Yapi Merkezi, is part of a 2,561km railway network in Tanzania.
The project aims to improve passenger and cargo transport and strengthen trade with neighboring countries. In June 2025, TRC began carrying freight to inland regions.
Previous reports from officials have also cited sporadic delays in services due to power supply concerns on the electric railway line. They would need stable power supply connectivity for smooth operations on the SGR.
