The government of Tanzania will allocate $10.2 million from the 2025–2026 budget to modernize the TAZARA railway, which links Tanzania and Zambia. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Of this amount, $5.6 million will cover staff salaries, while $4.6 million will fund upgrades to critical infrastructure facilities.

The plan includes constructing two additional tracks at Tunduma station, as well as purchasing 30 passenger coaches, one shunting locomotive, and essential spare parts.

TAZARA Concession Granted to China’s CCECC

At the same time, the government is finalizing a 30-year concession agreement with the Chinese company CCECC.

Under the deal, CCECC will rehabilitate the railway and supply rolling stock during the first three years.

After that, the company will operate the infrastructure under concession terms for the remaining 27 years.

China to Invest Over $1.4 Billion in TAZARA

CCECC intends to invest around $1 billion in track rehabilitation and another $400 million in modern locomotives and railcars.

These investments aim to significantly improve service efficiency and replace outdated rolling stock.

Tanzania’s authorities believe the TAZARA upgrade will strengthen transport integration with Zambia.

Moreover, the infrastructure improvements are expected to boost economic development across Eastern and Southern Africa.
