Talgo VI: Variable-Gauge Trains for European Routes
15.08.2025
Talgo VI are variable-gauge trains that Renfe leased to Leo Express, planning to operate them on cross-border routes between Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine after technical trials. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Talgo VI Deliveries for Leo Express
Renfe transferred three Talgo VI trainsets to its Czech subsidiary Leo Express to expand the company’s capabilities in the European market. Both parties are considering the transfer of additional units of this model.

Each trainset consists of 13 cars and is equipped with an automatic gauge-changing system. This allows smooth transitions between the 1,435 mm standard gauge and the 1,520 mm broad gauge, which is crucial for routes linking the EU and Ukraine.
These Talgo VI units were manufactured in the 1980s and previously operated on routes connecting Barcelona with Paris, Málaga, and Seville. They were retired from service in December last year but are now slated for refurbishment.
Talgo VI and Their Technical Capabilities
Before entering regular service, the trainsets will undergo testing at the Velim railway test circuit in the Czech Republic. These trials will confirm their readiness for high-speed operations and ensure passenger safety.
Talgo VI trains can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h and feature articulated cars, a tilting suspension system, and independently rotating wheels. This design improves stability and ride comfort, even on challenging track sections.
Leo Express has not yet disclosed the exact routes for these trains, but the company holds passenger transport licenses in Poland and Slovakia. These include services between Prague and the Medyka border crossing, as well as potential access to Ukraine’s Mostyska-2 station.
The company also operates bus routes between Mukachevo in Ukraine and Košice in Slovakia, ensuring multimodal connections. This approach enables seamless transfers between different modes of transport for passengers.
The cooperation between Renfe and Leo Express reflects a growing interest in variable-gauge trains, which can shorten travel times and boost the competitiveness of rail transport in the region.
