The contract between Talgo and German operator FlixTrain includes the delivery of 65 trains based on the Talgo 230 platform. The first five units will be produced in Spain, while the rest may be built in Hungary.

Talgo is facing delays in fulfilling its ongoing contracts. Spanish operator Renfe has imposed a €116 million penalty for the late delivery of 30 AVRIL trains. Additionally, Germany’s DB is reconsidering the scale of its order due to delivery setbacks.

As a result, Talgo is evaluating Hungary as an alternative production site to accelerate new deliveries. The cooperation with Magyar Vagon could also partially compensate for a failed acquisition attempt in 2023.

Back then, the Spanish government blocked the proposed takeover by Hungarian consortium Ganz-Mavag, citing the need to preserve control over strategic technologies. Similar offers from the Czech Republic and Poland were also rejected.

Talgo Expands Manufacturing Capacity Beyond Spain

In February, a Basque consortium acquired a 29.7% stake in Talgo, providing a compromise between complete foreign ownership and national control of the company.

Despite reporting record revenue in 2024, Talgo recorded a loss of €7.1 million in Q1 2025. This financial pressure prompted the search for new production strategies.

Talgo Could Speed Up FlixTrain Contract Fulfillment Through Hungary

If an agreement is reached with Magyar Vagon, the Hungarian site could help Talgo deliver FlixTrain’s trains faster and restore confidence among major clients.

The relocation would help avoid further penalties and improve logistics flexibility amid rising demand for high-speed rolling stock.
