Talgo breaks speed record on Iberian track
09.09.2022
The Talgo Avril division reached 360 kilometers per hour between Ourense and Santiago on Wednesday, breaking the speed record on the Iberian gauge.
Achieving this speed was part of the commissioning and certification process for 15 new trainsets. Railway Supply magazine writes about this with reference to RailTech.
The speed is all the more remarkable as trains capable of running on variable gauge tracks are currently limited to 250 kilometers per hour. On the 1668 mm Iberian gauge, this limit is 220 kilometers per hour.
However, Talgo Avril will reach speeds of up to 330 kilometers, regardless of the gauge. With this flexibility, the train will provide high-speed service in areas where a standard-gauge high-speed network has not yet been built.
After completion of trials on the Ourense-Santiago de Compostela high-speed line, the train will continue trial runs on other Spanish sections of the route. Talgo Avril consists of 12 wagons with a total length of 200 meters. It accommodates up to 581 passengers.
