Mayor Hou Yu-Ih emphasized that Taipei’s metro is essential for urban growth and daily mobility. Since Phase 1 operations began, ridership has surged by 830%.
The Department of Rapid Transit Systems introduced several innovations. Danhai Light Rail’s manual switch speed increased from 10 km/h to 60 km/h, boosting efficiency.
Smart elevators powered by AI are being tested on the Danhai and Ankeng lines, aiming to reduce waiting times. Full public access is expected in October.
Ankeng Light Rail’s AI-controlled signal system reduces train halts by 90%, improving travel times. It will launch publicly in October.
Shuangcheng Station now combines learning and recreation, adding community value. Meanwhile, public art along the Circular Line enhances Taipei’s urban image.
Taipei’s Second Phase Metro Projects Reach Key Milestones
The Sanying Line is undergoing testing and is expected to open in 2026. Tunnel boring for the Wanda–Zhonghe Line is complete, and a transfer corridor to the Circular Line is set for 2027.
The Tucheng–Shulin Line, now under city control, is advancing under the CQ880B contract, with bidding scheduled for June 25.
Taiwan’s first underground depot beneath a park is under construction as part of the Circular Line. Station Y22 will also connect to the future Wutai Light Rail.
The Xidong Line broke ground in March and features smart systems and increased seating. The Keelung MRT will begin with elevated segments pending cost approvals.
Taipei Plans Eight New Metro Lines to Strengthen the Network
In Phase 3, Taipei plans eight new routes, including the Wutai Light Rail and extensions to Taoyuan’s Bade District and Taipei’s Minsheng Line.
Feasibility studies are ongoing for the Shenkeng, Bali, Taiban, and Guangfu lines. The Linkou Light Rail is now a priority and awaits swift government approval.
If completed, this phase will add 39 kilometers and 42 stations, raising Taipei’s interchange stations to 33 and greatly enhancing regional transit.
