Tainan invests $1 billion in the 8.4 km Blue Line

Taiwan’s Executive Yuan has approved the construction of the Blue Line — an 8.4 km route with ten stations linking Tainan’s key residential and business districts. The project will become part of an integrated metropolitan transit system, enabling transfers to future MRT lines.

The total cost is estimated at NT$ 32.7 billion (around $1 billion). Of that amount, the central government will fund NT$ 19.3 billion (≈ $590 million), while the city government will contribute NT$ 13.4 billion (≈ $410 million). Construction is scheduled to begin by late 2026 and take roughly six years to complete.

Engineers selected a monorail system because it requires less land, minimizes environmental impact, and allows faster construction. The Blue Line will serve the busiest corridors of the city, reducing travel time and improving passenger comfort.

Tainan closes the transport gap and enhances urban mobility

Until recently, Tainan was the only one of Taiwan’s six major cities without a rapid transit rail system. The new monorail will change that, strengthening the city’s competitiveness and improving residents’ quality of life.

The project is expected to enhance mobility, attract private investment, and stimulate the local economy. Modern station architecture and energy-efficient train systems will make the network both functional and visually appealing, supporting the city’s tourism growth.
