Prague launched passenger service trials for the new Škoda 52T tram on June 17, 2025, using Line 12, which was chosen for its ideal urban landscape and operational length. Before carrying passengers, the vehicle completed over 20,000 kilometers of internal testing on the city’s tram network. These tests were conducted outside the regular timetable and focused on performance verification. City officials, including Prague Deputy Mayor Zdeněk Hřib and DPP executives, attended the launch. They emphasized the tram’s potential to improve urban mobility and provide comfortable public transport. Škoda 52T to Modernize Prague’s Urban Mobility The Škoda 52T is a fully low-floor, unidirectional tram designed for accessibility. It measures 32 meters, weighs 48 tonnes, and holds up to 243 passengers, including 70 seated. Five double-leaf doors support quick and smooth boarding. Inside, passengers benefit from air conditioning, LED lighting, and six information screens for real-time updates. Over 230 suppliers participated in its production, with 76% based in the Czech Republic. Project manager Petr Novotný highlighted the national collaboration behind the tram’s development. Future of Public Transport in Prague with Škoda 52T The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) signed a framework deal with Škoda Group in December 2023. It covers up to 200 trams, with a total estimated value of $704 million (€669.4 million). The firm order includes 40 units now being delivered in phases. The first entered homologation testing in January 2025 and began passenger testing this June. Additional 52T trams will arrive in Prague throughout summer. They will support ongoing testing and serve as training vehicles for new DPP tram operators. Vehicle no. 9504, delivered on May 13, 2025, is currently active in street tests. These runs focus on system reliability and electrical safety.
