Alstom and Avelia Stream Nordic X80: Expanding Sweden’s Rail Network
The deal is part of a framework agreement signed between Alstom and Västtrafik in 2018 for up to 100 Avelia Stream trains. The original deal comprised 45 firm orders, and this latest one thus reaffirms this long-term partnership and commitment to sustainable mobility for Västra Götaland.

The trains are originally supposed to enter service in 2024. However, testing has made it clear that it is necessary to refine the climate control system. Alstom has modified designs for cold climates, and it is now expected that these trains will enter service in late 2025-2026.
Avelia Stream Nordic X80: Technical Features and Regional Impact
Each train has a capacity to hold 270 passengers with a top speed of 200 km/h. They have been made for harsh climatic conditions and can withstand temperatures ranging between -40 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius with the ability to traverse through 80cm deep accumulated snow. Hence, this model is best suited for Northern Europe.
According to Västtrafik, this investment is necessary for both replacing old trains and satisfying increasing passenger volumes. Also by the 2030s, passenger volumes are expected to rise each day from 65 000 to 100 000. Thus, the procurement of trains such as Avelia Stream Nordic X80 is considered a fundamental element of transport policy in this particular region.
Alstom is continuing to enhance its position in Scandinavia with energy-saving technologies and efficient operating systems that promote safety and minimize ongoing maintenance expenses.
