The Summer Saturday discount is back on LIRR and Metro-North, letting monthly pass holders bring two guests for just $1 per person, each way, on Saturdays through August 30. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The discounted tickets are available on the MTA Train Time app under the Family Fares section, and also on board with no extra fees. This move encourages affordable weekend travel across the MTA network.

MTA CEO Janno Lieber said the agency is focused on giving riders more value while promoting train use for leisure, not just commuting. That’s why LIRR and Metro-North brought back the Summer Saturday discount.

However, this fare deal comes with a few rules. Riders cannot use their LIRR pass on Metro-North trains or vice versa. Cross-honoring between the two lines is not allowed.

Five LIRR trains are not eligible for the discount: the 7:13 a.m., 8:14 a.m., and 10:29 a.m. from Jamaica to Montauk, and the 7:47 a.m. from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma with its 9:14 a.m. Greenport connection.

Summer Saturday discount expands weekend access

With fuel prices high and traffic increasing, the MTA aims to shift more travelers toward rail. This fare program makes day trips to scenic towns and coastal destinations more accessible.

By offering flat-rate $1 fares, the agency targets families, tourists, and weekend adventurers looking for cost-effective transit alternatives.

How to use the Summer Saturday discount

Eligible riders just need a valid monthly pass to unlock the $1 fare for up to two companions. The program is active only on Saturdays and runs through the end of August.

This initiative reflects MTA’s broader strategy to attract more riders and strengthen public transport’s role in summer tourism.
