Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed the new rates took effect on June 20 and apply to LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3. He said the initiative helps families allocate money to more urgent school-related expenses.

On LRT-1, students now pay a minimum fare of $0.17, while a full ride from Dr. Abad Santos to Fernando Poe Jr. Station costs $0.48. LRT-2 rates start at $0.14 and go up to $0.31 from Recto to Antipolo.

MRT-3 offers the lowest reduced rates, with fares beginning at $0.10 and capping at $0.24 for a full ride from Taft Avenue to North Avenue. These rates apply only to single journey tickets.

Eligibility and Access to Student Discount

To receive the student discount, riders must present a valid school ID or proof of enrollment at the ticket counter before purchase. Beep Cards and Stored Value Tickets are not covered by the program.

This fare benefit also includes students pursuing postgraduate and law degrees. It remains valid seven days a week, including weekends and public holidays.

Expanded Student Support Through Public Transit

Authorities expect the updated fare policy to ease pressure on household budgets. Families can use saved funds for school projects, food allowances, or daily supplies.

The move aligns with the government’s broader plan to improve access to affordable transportation. It also encourages continued school attendance and supports academic mobility across Metro Manila.
