Turkish company Yapı Merkezi signed a $3 billion contract with Uganda for railway construction. The new project will connect Kampala and Malaba, improving trade links and reducing costs. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The $3 billion contract was signed on October 14, 2024. Railway construction aims to create strong transport connections between Uganda, Kenya, and other regional countries.

The design and construction will take four years, with completion expected in 2028. The railway will give Uganda access to the port of Mombasa on the Indian Ocean coast.

The new 273-kilometer railway will link Uganda’s capital, Kampala, with Malaba on the Kenyan border. Trains will run at a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

The Yapı Merkezi project is one of the company’s largest international undertakings. The line will include seven stations and three freight terminals, boosting cargo capacity to 25 million tons annually.

This railway construction project will help develop the region because it will reduce transportation costs and improve infrastructure. This will be a crucial step in boosting Uganda’s economic potential.

The contract with Yapı Merkezi replaces a previous agreement with a Chinese company, which was canceled in 2023 due to financial issues.
