The construction of the second metro line in Taiwan was approved by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in January 2024, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The new 24 km Blue Line, with 20 stations, will connect the east and west of Taichung.

The project’s cost is estimated at 161.51 billion Taiwanese dollars, with 67.56 billion allocated by the government and 93.9 billion from the Taichung authorities.

The Blue Line, incorporating both underground and above-ground segments, will link Taichung Port to the city center, providing transfers to the first metro line.

Equipped with GoA4 level automation, the metro trains are designed to transport over 12.2 thousand passengers per hour in each direction, contributing significantly to the city’s transportation infrastructure.

It’s worth noting that the first Green Line in Taichung’s metro system commenced passenger operations in April 2021, covering 16.71 km with 18 stations.

The line utilizes 18 two-car trains produced by Kawasaki Heavy Industries (Japan) and Taiwan Rolling Stock (TRSC).

The Blue Line is expected to begin operations in approximately 10 years.

Additionally, the preliminary planning stage for the third Orange Line metro project underscores the city’s strategic focus on infrastructure development and balanced economic growth in peripheral areas.
