Stoke-on-Trent centenary train tribute unveiled by Avanti West Coast

Avanti West Coast revealed the Stoke-on-Trent centenary train tribute to celebrate the city’s 100th anniversary with a commemorative nameplate on its Pendolino fleet. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The newly unveiled nameplate adds historical significance to the City of Stoke-on-Trent train, already known as the Pride of the Fleet. Many of Avanti’s staff hail from the region, strengthening the local connection.

Earlier this week, the Pendolino arrived at Stoke Station carrying city MPs and was welcomed by Lord Mayor Steve Watkins. He called the occasion a proud reflection of Stoke-on-Trent’s legacy and future vision.

Watkins said the Stoke-on-Trent centenary train tribute highlights the city’s national importance, reminding residents and travelers of its industrial strength and enduring identity. The ceremony was also attended by community leaders and media.
In addition to the city’s name, the train bears the name Brett in memory of Brett Hobson, a respected Avanti team member from Crewe who passed away from cancer. His legacy remains part of the train’s identity.

Avanti West Coast Managing Director Andy Mellors praised the city’s significance. He emphasized the company’s pride in serving Stoke-on-Trent and noted that 2025 marks 200 years of railway history in the UK.
The named train will continue operating on the West Coast Main Line, connecting cities and honoring the centenary through every journey. Gareth Snell, MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, thanked Avanti for supporting the civic celebration.
He noted that the tribute would raise awareness of the milestone as the train travels throughout the country, carrying the spirit of Stoke-on-Trent far and wide.
