From 2010 to 2022, the average age of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy’s (KTZ) passenger wagon fleet decreased from 73% to 46%, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
According to Kazakhstan’s national carrier, a total of 1,224 wagons were acquired between 2010 and 2022, including 676 manufactured using Spanish Talgo technology.

Currently, the passenger wagon fleet of KTZ’s subsidiary, “Passenger Transportation,” consists of 2,106 wagons, with 32% of them being over 20 years old.
KTZ also notes that 76% of the fleet is equipped with air conditioning systems, while the remaining wagons lack air conditioning as per the manufacturer’s design.
Kazakh company “ZIKSTO” supplies passenger locomotive wagons to KTZ. In mid-August, the CEO of “Passenger Transportation,” Zhanibek Tayzhanov, announced plans to acquire 100 wagons this year.
Furthermore, between 2025 and 2030, the fleet plans to receive more than 500 Stadler wagons, which will be assembled in Astana as part of a significant contract signed at the end of the previous year.
