Joint tests of Knorr-Bremse and Voith digital couplers
18.04.2025
Knorr-Bremse and Voith successfully conducted tests of next-generation hybrid digital couplers with the support of Siemens Mobility and the Austrian rail operator ÖBB. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

During the trials on Vectron AC and Dual Mode locomotives, engineers installed Hybrid Link and CargoFlex Hybrid couplers. These demonstrated reliable connection not only between couplers from different manufacturers but also with the traditional screw coupling.

Tests confirmed compatibility of different coupling systems
The joint tests marked a crucial step in the development of digital couplers, as they verified interoperability between systems from different producers. This paves the way for standardization across the rail industry.
Despite positive results, engineers identified several technical flaws. These issues will be resolved during the next phase of testing and technical refinement.
Earlier in 2024, the European Commission approved Voith’s solution as the official DAC standard. The technology is designed to automate wagon coupling, including brake lines, power supply, and data connections.
New implementation stages after successful tests
Pilot implementation of digital couplers in Europe will begin in 2026, with large-scale deployment scheduled for 2028. By 2030, Voith plans to equip 23,000 locomotives and 450,000 freight wagons with DAC.
However, some European freight operators remain skeptical about the project’s timelines and costs. They are concerned that adapting the existing infrastructure may require significant investment.
Nevertheless, the completed tests strengthen the position of this technology in the market. The results confirm that standardization is achievable, and full digitalization of the rail sector is within reach in the near future.
