The project, delivered in partnership with Hitachi Rail and Eversholt Rail, totaled £27 million. Work took place at the Ashford depot, where all 29 trainsets in the series were refurbished.

During phase one, crews fully renovated the interiors by replacing carpets, seats, and applying new paint. Each seat was equipped with a USB power outlet, and LED lighting was installed to improve energy efficiency.

Next Phase of Modernization Includes Safety and Passenger Information Upgrades

The second phase is now underway. All 174 cars will be fitted with a new passenger information system and upgraded CCTV. These additions will enhance onboard safety and provide train operators with better visibility at platforms.

In parallel, each unit is being repainted in a new livery. This exterior redesign complements the interior upgrades and reinforces the fleet’s refreshed identity.

Modernization Supports Broader Fleet Renewal Strategy

Class 395 trains, manufactured by Hitachi Rail, have operated since 2009. Reaching speeds of up to 140 mph, they connect London with Ashford, Medway, and East Kent.

This modernization project is part of Southeastern’s larger investment in its rolling stock. It includes the refurbishment of Class 376 trains, installation of toilets in all Class 707 units, and the introduction of 13 Class 377 trains.

The company also plans to replace older Networker trains with new vehicles. This strategy aims to ensure more comfortable, reliable travel and strengthen Southeastern’s market position.
