West Lake Corridor extension and new stations

The extension runs from north Hammond, Indiana. It ends at the border of Munster and Dyer, Indiana. Meanwhile, South Shore officials said the route will add travel options in Lake County, Indiana. They made that point in a press release. It will serve fast-growing parts of the county.

For example, Monon Corridor 101 notes that the extension includes four stations. They are Hammond Gateway, South Hammond (173rd Street), Munster Ridge, and Munster/Dyer. Still, South Shore officials said the line takes its name from the historic Monon Railroad. It uses that former right-of-way.

Monon Corridor service schedule and network changes

Separately, South Shore Line will introduce a revised timetable with nearly 30 train options. These will run on weekdays and weekends, as reported by Progressive Railroading. The operator is the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District.

At the same time, the Monon Corridor is South Shore’s first branch line. Construction on the extension began in 2020. Also, the train service will be referred to as two corridors after the project. The Lakeshore runs from South Bend, Indiana, to Chicago. The Monon runs from Munster/Dyer to Chicago.
