South Eastern Railway introduces heat-resistant IsoMat system
18.08.2025
South Eastern Railway has started testing IsoMat technology on the Kent Line to enhance signalling resilience during extreme heat, improve reliability, and protect passengers and freight from costly service disruptions. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

South Eastern Railway expands IsoMat trials
South Eastern Railway collaborated with Flint Engineering to introduce IsoMat, a patented thermal system. Engineers installed it on signalling cabinets vulnerable to overheating, where summer temperatures often rise beyond 70°C and threaten equipment reliability.

Unlike conventional cooling systems, IsoMat requires no maintenance, power supply, or cabinet modifications. It can be fitted in under an hour, and because of its efficiency, it transfers heat thousands of times more effectively than aluminium.
During Network Rail trials, IsoMat lowered cabinet temperatures by more than 21% on the hottest days. Encouraged by these results, the operator will extend installations to ten high-risk locations this summer, while broader rollout is planned for 2026.
South Eastern Railway supports climate resilience
David Davidson, Chief Operating Officer, said extreme weather events demand innovation. He explained that IsoMat provides a simple yet powerful solution, helping keep passengers and freight moving even during heatwaves.
Flint Engineering’s CEO, Mark Robinson, added that IsoMat demonstrates how engineering innovation delivers climate resilience and operational benefits. Because of its design, the system reduces failures, cuts maintenance costs, and supports long-term reliability.
Network Rail is evaluating IsoMat as part of a broader sustainability review. A nationwide rollout would follow procurement rules, but the potential is significant: with 20,000 miles of track and thousands of assets, overheating remains a major concern.
Beyond rail, Flint Engineering prepares commercial IsoMat production for industries such as construction, electrification, and refrigeration. These markets also face rising demand for efficient, low-energy temperature management.
