South Coast Rail Set to Launch, Reconnecting Communities with Boston
09.02.2025
South Coast Rail will soon begin service, linking South Coast cities with Boston. The long-awaited project introduces modern stations, enhanced accessibility, and improved commuter options for travelers. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

South Coast Rail Nears Completion
Jean Fox, Director of Public Engagement for South Coast Rail, confirmed the project’s final phase. She assured residents that service will launch as planned, reconnecting the region with Boston.

The six-year development includes six new stations, with two located in New Bedford. Additional stations in Fall River, Freetown, East Taunton, and Middleboro expand regional rail access.
New Bedford stations are positioned to maximize convenience for residents and commuters. One station will be near Church Street, while the other is at Seastreak Ferry Terminal.
Layover facilities will support overnight train storage but will not serve as maintenance hubs. These locations ensure efficient train operations and readiness for daily commuter services.
New Stations and Accessibility Features
South Coast Rail extends 37 miles of additional track to connect Middleboro Station. The Fall River/New Bedford line will complete its journey to South Station in 90 minutes.
Fox emphasized that the new track builds upon existing Middleboro/Lakeville lines. This upgrade enables a long-awaited direct link to Taunton, Fall River, and New Bedford.
All stations meet modern accessibility standards, including ramps and raised platforms. Passengers with strollers or mobility aids can board any train car with ease.
Additional station features include electric vehicle charging stations, protective canopies, and emergency phones. Fox highlighted that all design elements meet the latest safety and comfort standards.
Platforms incorporate a vinyl-infused concrete mix to enhance traction in icy conditions. This improvement helps reduce slipperiness, improving passenger safety year-round.
A newly constructed pedestrian bridge in New Bedford increases station accessibility. It also eliminates the risk of pedestrians crossing busy roads like Route 18.
The commuter rail schedule will provide 32 weekday trips and 26 weekend trips. Late-night services will ensure commuters can return home after evening events.
Fox assured travelers that weekday trains will run every 70 minutes. Weekend trains will operate every 120 minutes, offering consistent and convenient service.
A dedicated shuttle service will link key endpoints with East Taunton Station. This will improve transit frequency and accessibility for South Coast commuters.
Sixteen modern bi-level train cars will soon enter service, offering upgraded amenities. Each train car will feature bathrooms, tables, and complimentary WiFi for passengers.
Each bi-level train car can hold up to 150 passengers, with total train capacity reaching 750. This upgrade allows for more efficient travel between South Coast communities and Boston.
Fares, Ticketing, and Parking Details
South Coast Rail operates under fare Zone 8, with tickets priced at $12.25 per trip. Reduced fares are available for $6, while weekend and holiday fares cost $10.
Children under 11, legally blind passengers, police, firefighters, and military personnel ride free. Parking costs $4 on weekdays and $2 on weekends and holidays.
Passengers can purchase tickets through the MyTicket MBTA app or directly on board. However, ticket kiosks will not be available at stations, and Charlie Cards are not accepted.
