SNCB Abandons Wi-Fi Plans and Focuses on Improved 5G Connectivity
16.12.2024
SNCB has officially decided to abandon Wi-Fi installation on trains due to its exorbitant costs. Instead, it will invest in improving 5G connectivity for passengers by upgrading train windows. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Why SNCB Dropped Wi-Fi Plans?
The national operator revealed that implementing Wi-Fi would cost €160 million for installation and an additional €13 million annually for maintenance. Such an investment was deemed impractical by SNCB’s CEO Sophie Dutordoir, who rejected the idea in 2017. The plan also required immobilizing trains for upgrades and hiring extra staff, further complicating logistics.

In response, SNCB decided to prioritize passenger connectivity by enhancing mobile data accessibility through innovative solutions. Adjusting train window coatings to improve 4G and 5G network penetration will cost an estimated €40 million, significantly less than Wi-Fi.
Benefits and Challenges of SNCB’s 5G Initiative
While the 5G-focused initiative offers a cost-effective solution, Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet acknowledged its limitations. Certain stretches of Belgium’s rail network still suffer from weak mobile coverage, which could hinder the initiative’s success. However, this strategic move aligns with government efforts to modernize public transportation while reducing financial burdens.
By prioritizing mobile network improvements, SNCB aims to deliver a practical and affordable connectivity solution. This initiative reflects the operator’s commitment to balancing passenger satisfaction and sustainable costs.
Enhanced 5G connectivity offers passengers reliable access to digital tools, making it a forward-looking approach compared to outdated Wi-Fi systems. The project underscores SNCB’s dedication to innovation and cost-efficiency.
