Snälltåget Arctic Circle night train set for Narvik

Snälltåget Arctic Circle night train will run from Malmö to Narvik in northern Norway in November 2026, offering a long-distance journey via Stockholm and across the Arctic Circle. The service will give passengers access to northern Scandinavian destinations linked to Northern Lights viewing.

The outbound train is scheduled to leave Malmö on Monday, November 23, 2026⁠. It will continue via Stockholm and northern Sweden before reaching Narvik. The return service is planned for Friday, November 27, 2026, with the train travelling back from Narvik to Stockholm and Malmö.

The Malmö–Narvik route covers 2,156 kilometers, taking passengers from the Skåne region in southern Sweden to mountain areas beyond the Arctic Circle. At the northern end of the route, travelers can spend several days in the region, with options for accommodation, mountain activities and Northern Lights observation.

Snälltåget Arctic Circle night train route via Stockholm

Under the preliminary November 2026 timetable, the train will depart Malmö at noon on Monday, November 23, 2026. After calling at Stockholm, it will continue north across Sweden and pass beyond the Arctic Circle.

During the final part of the northbound journey, the service will call at several locations linked to Arctic tourism, including Kiruna, Abisko and Björkliden. The train is then expected to arrive in Narvik, Norway, on Tuesday afternoon.

The return leg is planned for Friday, November 27, 2026. The train will leave Narvik and reach Stockholm and Malmö the following day.

Snälltåget notes that the timings are still preliminary. They may be adjusted depending on infrastructure works.

Abisko among the recommended Northern Lights destinations

Snälltåget points passengers interested in the Northern Lights toward Abisko. The town is known for favorable conditions for observing the natural phenomenon. One accommodation option mentioned by the operator is STF Abisko Turiststation, which is located close to nature and Abisko National Park.

Travelers can also choose accommodation in Björkliden or Kiruna. These destinations are presented as alternatives for those who want to combine the rail journey with activities in the mountain region.

The special service will run along one of northern Europe’s most scenic railway corridors. Its route passes through mountain landscapes, Arctic towns and areas closely associated with winter tourism in Scandinavia.

Krogen dining car will operate on board

Snälltåget’s Krogen dining car⁠, used on the operator’s night trains, will be available during the journey. Passengers will be able to order hot meals while travelling north. The company recommends booking a table and pre-ordering meals when buying a ticket.

The dining car will also have a self-service section offering coffee, tea, water, soft drinks, sandwiches, pastries and snacks.

For this journey, lunch is expected to cost around EUR 18, while dinner will cost around EUR 27.5. Breakfast can be reserved either in the dining car or as a compartment package for around EUR 13.7. Pre-ordered meals will also include vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free alternatives.

Private compartments and Interrail reservations

Several comfort categories will be available on the Snälltåget service. Passengers may book a private compartment for one traveler or for a group of up to six people. The compartment is arranged for seating at boarding and is later converted for overnight travel. Bed linen is included, and passengers make up their own beds.

A lower-cost option will be a seat in a shared compartment with other passengers. When prepared for sleeping, this compartment has three berths on each side, with the upper berths reached by ladder.

Interrail passes⁠ will be accepted on the train, but passengers will need reservations. Interrail travelers can reserve a private compartment on the night train from 2,499 Swedish kronor per compartment.

Passengers booking a return trip with a private compartment will receive a 20% discount.
