Built in 1950 as part of a six-unit order for the Reading Company, this unit later operated under SEPTA. In the 1990s, it ran in excursion service and was eventually transferred to Scranton, Pennsylvania.

In 2023, SMS Rail Service acquired Reading 902 and a companion unit from historical rail societies. After years of storage, the diesel engine was fully restored to working condition earlier this year.

SMS Rail Service Launches Scenic Rambler Excursions

Reading 902 will lead the “Scenic Rambler” on May 10. The 32-mile round trip runs between Swedesboro and Mannington and lasts about two hours, offering passengers a historic rail experience.

The Woodstown Central began operating in November 2022 on Salem County-owned tracks that connect Woodstown, Swedesboro, and Salem. These routes highlight South Jersey’s countryside.

With the steam engine No. 9 currently undergoing repairs, Reading 902 will head most excursions throughout the spring. The diesel unit ensures continued service without interruptions.

Restoration Reflects SMS Rail Service’s Heritage Mission

By restoring Reading 902, SMS Rail Service demonstrates its commitment to preserving regional rail history. The project also expands the operator’s heritage tourism offerings.

Future plans include themed rides and seasonal events that enhance community engagement. These efforts aim to attract families, history enthusiasts, and tourists across New Jersey.

The return of Reading 902 strengthens Woodstown Central’s reputation as a destination for nostalgic, yet reliable, rail travel. Riders can now enjoy a blend of vintage charm and operational excellence.
