Slovenian Parliament Approves Divača-Koper Railway Expansion for Future Freight Efficiency
31.10.2024
The Slovenian Parliament has approved the Divača-Koper Railway Expansion, set to begin in 2026. This expansion will enhance access to Slovenia’s largest port, the Port of Koper, by 2030. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Enhancing Slovenia’s Connectivity Through the Divača-Koper Railway Expansion
Slovenia’s Parliament has approved the construction of a second track on the Divača-Koper railway. Initially intended as a single-track line, the expansion underscores the critical role of the Port of Koper. It will support regional trade and freight transportation, solidifying Slovenia as a strategic logistics hub in Europe. The second track will operate alongside the first track, expected to be completed in 2025.

Slovenia appointed 2TDK, a state-owned entity, to manage the construction and operations of both tracks. This dual-track system is expected to streamline Slovenia’s transportation network, alleviating road congestion by moving freight transport to rail. It is a strategic step forward, ensuring more efficient trade with Europe.
Financial Backing and Environmental Considerations for Divača-Koper Railway Expansion
With an estimated cost of €354 million, the Divača-Koper Railway Expansion is primarily funded by the European Investment Bank, contributing €250 million. This significant investment highlights the European Union’s commitment to strengthening regional infrastructure while addressing environmental impacts. During discussions, Slovenia also addressed concerns raised by Italy about potential environmental effects, aiming for sustainable infrastructure development.
Once fully operational, the expansion is expected to facilitate up to 24 million tonnes of cargo annually, improving Slovenia’s connectivity with European trade networks. This project marks a shift towards more sustainable transport by moving cargo from roads to rails. The enhanced rail line will play a vital role in promoting eco-friendly, efficient logistics for Slovenia and its neighbors.
