Sleeper trains in Europe to offer private, affordable cabins

Nox, a startup based in Berlin, plans to launch its sleeper trains in Europe by 2027 and expand the network to 100 cities by 2035. The aim is to rival budget airlines.

Founders say the service will focus on comfort, affordability, and privacy. Passengers will board in the evening, sleep in private rooms, and arrive refreshed at their destinations in the morning.

Each train will include three room types: single and double loft cabins and double vista cabins. All rooms will feature 2-meter beds, seating areas, tables, and large windows.

Fares will begin at €79 ($85) for single rooms and €149 ($160) for doubles. Nox promises these prices will match or undercut short-haul flights across Europe.

Sleeper trains in Europe positioned to compete with airlines

Nox co-founder Janek Smalla said the cabins will accommodate more passengers than traditional night trains due to standardized design and layout.

This approach will enable the company to run affordable services on more than 35 routes. Nox has already reserved train coaches and is finalizing cabin interiors.

However, some experts remain skeptical. Travel journalist Simon Calder doubts the network’s feasibility without significant funding, estimating at least £1 billion ($1.28 billion) is needed for rolling stock.

Despite the challenges, Nox sees strong potential in reclaiming overnight rail travel in Europe. With a growing demand for sustainable alternatives, the company hopes to reshape how people cross the continent.
