Škoda and Microvast unite to develop new technologies

Skoda Group has entered into a strategic partnership deal with Microvast, a lithium-ion battery and energy storage solutions firm based in the US. The two firms are set to develop energy solutions for public transport, especially trains and trams.

During the primary stage, the engineers will be engaged in designing battery systems for the future generation of rail vehicles from Skoda. By 2026, they would be launching the first prototype of a vehicle that would incorporate a jointly developed battery system into it, thereby increasing energy efficiency and aiding technology autonomy.

Skoda is investing in electrification and supply chain diversification because of market demand for a stable and flexible offering. In December of 2024, Skoda launched its first battery-powered train based on its ‘RegioPanter’ platform. Later that year, ABB Group was announced as a supplier of ‘lithium titanate oxide batteries’ to this new series of trains. Such efforts by Skoda reveal that they value innovation and energy sustainability in their operations and offerings.

Škoda strengthens its position in the battery tram segment

Aside from its projects involving railways, Skoda is still expanding its offerings of battery-operated trams. Since 2015, Skoda has been supplying these trams to Turkey, and the ones used in Germany’s Mannheim, Ludwigshafen, and Heidelberg have supercapacitor technology, enabling trams to run for a few kilometers without overhead contact wires, which is essential for operation within historic city areas.

There is a partnership deal between Microvast and Skoda that gives Skoda American expertise and technology concerning high-density and long-life batteries. Both firms believe that through their combined expertise, innovation in Europe’s railway market and Skoda’s worldwide competitiveness in transport solutions would be strengthened.
