Singapore expands LRT network with advanced technology

Between 2022 and 2023, SBS Transit signed two contracts worth $400 million with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. These agreements cover 25 Crystal Mover trains, signaling systems, and depot equipment. Production takes place at Mitsubishi’s Mihara facility in Japan.

Singapore expects phased deliveries of the remaining 23 trains by 2028, ensuring seamless integration and minimal service disruptions during the rollout. This schedule supports network modernization while maintaining high service standards.

The new fleet will replace 25 single-car and eight two-car C810 and C810A trains produced between 2000 and 2003. However, eight two-car C810A units will stay operational, providing extra capacity during peak periods.

Singapore invests in automation for future-ready transport

SBS Transit emphasizes automation as part of its long-term strategy. Driverless technology aims to reduce delays, optimize energy consumption, and enhance passenger comfort. The Crystal Mover platform has already proven its value in multiple global cities.

With gradual deployment through 2028, the modernization project reflects Singapore’s commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency, and innovation in public transport. Mitsubishi’s advanced systems will play a critical role in shaping the future of urban mobility.
