Siemens Mobility’s New Facility to Bolster Local Economy
Plans for Siemens Mobility’s £100m facility at Southpoint Business Park near Chippenham were approved by Wiltshire Council, promising substantial economic benefits. This center will include cutting-edge offices, production facilities, laboratories, and a test-track bed for signalling infrastructure equipment, showcasing Siemens’ commitment to advancing rail technology in the UK.
Key Advantages of the Siemens Mobility Project in Chippenham
Following consultations with the town council and stakeholders, Siemens adjusted its plans to address community concerns. Proposed changes, such as reducing the speed limit near the new site, aim to enhance safety for cyclists. Chippenham Town Council welcomed these revisions, while Wiltshire Council’s report emphasized the economic benefits, noting that this site would become the UK’s only dedicated signalling and control facility, offering well-paid, highly skilled jobs.
In its application, Siemens Mobility cited a recent study indicating that the current Langley Park location was no longer “economically viable” due to limited expansion options and sustainability goals. Since its founding in 1897 by Evans O’Donnell, the Chippenham facility has contributed to key infrastructure projects, including the Elizabeth Line and Birmingham New Street Station redevelopment, solidifying Siemens’ standing in the rail sector.
The new facility is anticipated to open by 2026, setting the stage for Siemens Mobility to enhance its UK operations and contribute to the country’s rail infrastructure. The move to a larger, more modern facility will allow Siemens to increase its output, bolstering the local economy and providing additional opportunities for related businesses in the region.
