Sweden and Norway are jointly acquiring railcars for transporting military equipment, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Sweden and Norway Purchase Military Equipment Wagons

This initiative became possible thanks to an agreement between the Norwegian railway company Bane NOR and the armed forces of both countries.

The agreement includes the purchase of new railcars that will be used to transport heavy equipment, including modern tanks.

The new agreement addresses the transportation needs of military equipment in Norway and the northern regions.

The acquisition of these wagons is expected to significantly enhance rail transport capabilities not only within the countries but also towards other European states.

According to Bane NOR’s CEO, Thor Gjermund Eriksen, this initiative represents a major step forward in ensuring military rail transport in Norway, Sweden, and beyond.

Particular attention in the agreement is given to the standards of the purchased wagons.

They must conform to a unified model, meeting the stringent military requirements of both countries and complying with existing regulations.

It’s important to note that if these wagons are not needed by the Norwegian armed forces, they may be used for Bane NOR’s domestic needs. Additionally, there is an option for renting them out for civilian cargo transportation.

Norwegian Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård expressed his support for this project.

He noted that given the current geopolitical situation, particularly considering the war in Ukraine and the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO, close cooperation between the Nordic countries in cross-border transportation is of particular importance.

The purchase of wagons capable of meeting both military and civilian needs is a significant step in this direction.

It was previously reported that Tatravagonka is supplying platforms for transporting NATO military equipment.

This project is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the defense capabilities of European countries through the development of rail infrastructure.
