Shimmns wagons for Novelis: 220 units for aluminium transport
17.12.2025
Shimmns wagons for Novelis are part of how Novelis is updating its rail logistics in Europe, as noted in a statement on the Novelis website. The company is buying 220 Shimmns wagons, with investment estimated at around €43 million.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Rail plays a key role in Novelis’ transport flows: it accounts for 95% of total freight movements between the company’s 10 European production sites. Compared with the previously leased fleet, the new Shimmns wagons are designed to carry different types of cargo—aluminium coils, ingots and scrap; these details were also cited by Railway Technology.
Shimmns wagons for Novelis on the Nachterstedt–Neuss route
The increased capacity of the wagons is expected to support higher rail volumes of aluminium ingots from Novelis’ largest aluminium recycling plant in Europe, in Nachterstedt (Saxony-Anhalt), to the Novelis Alunorf joint venture plant in Neuss (North Rhine-Westphalia). Neuss is home to the world’s largest rolling mill for producing aluminium sheet. Previously, part of this traffic was handled by road.

Switching to the new rolling stock is expected to cut around 2,000 truck trips per year and, in turn, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by lowering the share of road transport on this route.
Deliveries of Shimmns wagons and On Rail’s role
So far, Novelis has received the first 30 Shimmns wagons. The remaining wagons are planned to be shipped by September 2026; the timeline and overall delivery parameters were reported by Transport Journal. The supplier is the German company On Rail.
