The project is part of a broader €43M investment by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This funding focuses on upgrading freight infrastructure, including wagon repairs and new equipment acquisition.
The procurement process will occur in two distinct phases to ensure transparency and competitiveness. The initiative aims to improve Serbia’s rail freight operations and meet growing logistics demands.
EBRD Loan Powers Serbia’s Freight Upgrades
In 2022, the EBRD approved a €43M sovereign-guaranteed loan for Serbia Cargo. This financing supports several key contracts to modernize Serbia’s rail freight network effectively.
The project includes acquiring 50 S-series freight wagons for container transport and overhauling 1,250 existing wagons. Additionally, consultants and supervisors will oversee repairs, ensuring quality control and timely delivery.
Serbia Cargo operates across bulk, wagonload, intermodal, and transit services, addressing a wide range of transportation needs. This modernization project solidifies the nation’s position as a regional logistics hub.
The EBRD’s support underscores the significance of rail freight infrastructure in fostering economic growth. By upgrading its fleet, Serbia aims to boost trade capacity and improve regional connectivity.
