Seoul Metro Restores Line 5 Services After Arson Incident

Seoul Metro resumed full service on Line 5 after a fire incident caused by arson, prompting swift action from emergency crews and renewed security measures across the system. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The fire broke out at 8:47 a.m. inside a train between Yeoinaru and Mapo stations. A man in his 60s, reportedly carrying a fuel canister, ignited a blaze using a lighter torch.

Passengers and the train operator quickly responded with fire extinguishers, containing the flames until emergency crews arrived. The fire was fully extinguished by 10:24 a.m.
A total of 230 responders, including 166 firefighters and 60 police officers, reached the site, supported by 68 fire response units. The suspect was arrested shortly after at Yeoinaru Station.
Over 400 passengers were safely evacuated through the tunnel. Twenty-one individuals received treatment for smoke inhalation and minor injuries, including ankle fractures.

Seoul Metro announced it will enhance surveillance and security at all stations and trains through June 3, in collaboration with police and safety agencies.
