SBB explores buying trains with 15-year manufacturer maintenance to ensure long-term reliability. Alternatively, they consider leasing them for 15 years to optimize costs.
SBB High-Speed Trains Replace Aging Fleet
The new fleet will upgrade routes and replace outdated Astoro (Alstom ETR 610) trains. These older models face retirement in the late 2030s, needing action now.
In 2023, SBB refurbished 19 Astoro trains, extending their service life by 15 years. This step bridges the gap until the modern fleet arrives.
Europe’s Rail Vision Grows
Countries like the UK, Italy, Poland, and the Czech Republic push for faster rail links. Their efforts support the European Commission’s unified rail network goal.
The European Commission prioritizes a seamless high-speed rail system in budget talks. Consequently, improved connectivity promises economic growth and faster travel across borders.
SBB aligns with this trend, enhancing links to cities like Barcelona and London by 2030s. Thus, Switzerland strengthens its role in Europe’s rail future.
